The Akosombo dam spillage has led to the displacement of 12,000 individuals
The spillage of the Akosombo Dam has resulted in the displacement of around 12,000 people, according to Dr. Senanu Kwesi Dzokoto, the Deputy Director of Health Services in the Volta Region.
This controlled spillage, initiated by the Volta River Authority (VRA) starting from September 15, 2023, became necessary due to an ongoing increase in the water level of the Akosombo reservoir.
Several regions, including South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and other areas, have experienced flooding, causing residents to be displaced from their homes.
In an interview with, Dr. Dzokoto explained that the health directorate is actively taking steps to ensure the safety and immediate needs of the displaced individuals are met.
They have established safe havens, particularly in the hardest-hit North Tongu district, where sanitary conditions are being improved. Mobile teams have also been deployed to provide psychosocial support, and they are prepared to address any health-related emergencies.
Additionally, education on proper health practices is being offered to residents to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, with a focus on preventing issues like cholera.
Dr. Dzokoto noted that during their rapid assessment, they found that around 25% of Mepe in the North Tongu District was submerged in water, including two-story buildings with roofs almost entirely covered by water.
