Kenya to end doctors-swap deal with Cuba
Kenya has decided to terminate a six-year agreement that allowed over 100 Cuban doctors to work in Kenyan hospitals.
Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha announced this decision to address various challenges faced by Kenyan health workers, including a lack of employment opportunities.
The 2017 agreement had established an exchange program, wherein Cuban doctors filled staffing gaps in county hospitals, while Kenyan healthcare professionals traveled to Cuba for specialized medical training.
However, this program was met with resistance from Kenyan medical practitioners who contended that local doctors possessed the same qualifications as their Cuban counterparts.
Additionally, concerns were raised about the Kenyan government paying Cuban professionals significantly more than local doctors, while some domestically trained doctors remained unemployed.
Kenyan doctors and other healthcare workers have frequently resorted to strikes to demand higher wages, improved working conditions, and the hiring of more medical professionals.
