Former NFL player Sergio Brown charged with his mother’s murder
A former NFL player, Sergio Brown, was arrested in California on Tuesday and charged with the murder of his mother, Myrtle Brown, 73, who was found dead near her home outside of Chicago last month.
Sergio Brown, 35, had been on the run since the discovery of his mother’s body. He is set to be extradited to Illinois to face first-degree murder charges.
Sergio Brown had a six-year career in professional football, playing for four teams during that time.
Myrtle Brown’s body was discovered in a creek by Maywood, Illinois police on September 16, following a report from her family about her disappearance.
The medical examiner determined that she had suffered multiple assault injuries, leading to her death being ruled a homicide.
While evading law enforcement, Sergio Brown posted erratic videos and messages online from Mexico, where he claimed that reports of his mother’s murder were “fake news.”
In his online rants, he alleged that his mother was in Mexico on vacation at the time of the incident and accused the FBI and Maywood Police Department of involvement.
Sergio Brown was deported back to the United States and subsequently arrested by police in San Diego on Tuesday.
In a statement, Myrtle Brown’s family expressed relief that Sergio Brown had been “apprehended and returned to the United States unharmed”.
Sergio Brown now faces first-degree murder charges, which could result in a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Born in Maywood, he attended a local high school and later Notre Dame University.
His professional football career began in 2010 with the New England Patriots, and he also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars before leaving the NFL in 2016.
