Afghanistan hit by second earthquake days after first deadly temblor
Western Afghanistan has experienced another earthquake shortly after two large quakes in the same area resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people.
This latest earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3 and occurred at approximately 05:10 local time (00:40 GMT) on Wednesday, located 28km (17 miles) north of Herat city.
Health officials have reported that over 100 individuals were injured and have been taken to hospitals.
The full extent of the impact is not yet clear, but many people were sleeping in the open as their homes were destroyed during the previous earthquake on Saturday.
Aid organizations have pointed out shortages of essential supplies, including blankets and food.
An eyewitness in central Herat described waking up in terror and fleeing her home, as she had been unable to get proper sleep in the days leading up to the recent quakes.
She expressed a deep sense of fear and vulnerability, having run barefoot to the outskirts of the city, where many residents have been staying in tents since the first earthquake.
The earthquake on Saturday struck Zindajan, a rural district situated about 40km from Herat. Images from affected villages show entire houses, unable to withstand the tremors, reduced to rubble.
Afghanistan is susceptible to earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, as it is located near the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
