Korle-Bu urges parliament to accelerate the legalization of organ harvesting and transplanting
Dr. David Nkansah, Chairman of the Board of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has called on Parliament to expedite the process of legalizing organ harvesting and transplantation in Ghana.
This move, he argued, would potentially save the lives of numerous Ghanaians in need of organ transplants.
Dr. Nkansah made this plea during the hospital’s centenary anniversary launch in Accra. He emphasized the importance of parliamentary support in enabling the hospital to gain international recognition as a healthcare institution renowned for its critical health interventions in the West African sub-region.
He stated, “We are therefore calling on parliament and other agencies to support the preparation and passage of the law on tissue donation, harvesting, and storage of various organs that will save the lives of thousands of Ghanaians who are sick and in need of them.”
Additionally, Dr. Nkansah highlighted the hospital’s aspiration to become a hub for medical tourism as part of its commitment to achieving universal health coverage.
He suggested that corporate entities could contribute significantly to improving the hospital’s infrastructure by adopting specific wards for renovation.
