South Africa: Supermarket retailers start rationing eggs amid bird-flu outbreak
Amid a severe outbreak of avian flu in South Africa, supermarkets in the country are enforcing egg rationing due to a shortage of poultry products.
Several stores have restricted customers to purchasing a maximum of six eggs, with Woolworths, a major retail chain, confirming to local media outlet News24 that it had “implemented a limit on whole egg purchases in our stores to six eggs per customer”.
Meanwhile, Pick n Pay, another retail chain, has urged responsible shopping and will restrict customers to buying one or two packs of eggs.
The avian flu outbreak and its impact on the poultry industry, compounded by power cuts, have prompted warnings from producers about a shortage of both eggs and poultry meat.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported last week that more than 2.5 million chickens have been culled, with the outbreak affecting five out of the eight provinces in the country.
