Kurt Okraku secures a second term as President of GFA
Kurt Okraku has secured a second term as President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after a one-sided contest held at the Global Dream Hotel in Tamale, Northern Region, on October 5, 2023. Okraku’s re-election was overwhelming, with 117 YES votes, only two NO votes, and one abstention.
Notably, Okraku ran uncontested in the GFA elections, as his competitor, George Afriyie, was disqualified by both the Elections Committee and the Appeals Committee following a review process.
Kurt Okraku first assumed office as GFA President on October 25, 2019. Despite the looming threat of an injunction notice, GFA executives decided to proceed with the electoral process.
Background:
Initially scheduled for September 27, 2023, the GFA Congress was rescheduled to early October in Tamale due to an injunction notice filed by King Faisal.
The club argued that holding a valid Congress to elect the President before new Executive Council (Exco) representatives were duly elected was improper and illegal.
King Faisal, based in Kumasi, sought a declaration that any resolutions passed by the current Exco regarding the GFA President’s election before Exco representatives were chosen constituted a breach of trust, confidence, and loyalty.
