Scientists behind mRNA Covid vaccines win 2023 Nobel Prize

mRNA

Two scientists who developed the technology that resulted in the mRNA Covid vaccines have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The award will be share between Dr. Katalin Kariko and Dr. Drew Weissman .

Millions of people worldwide now have access to the technology, which was in testing before the pandemic.

The same mRNA technology is currently being studied for various illnesses, including cancer.

The immune system is trained by vaccinations to identify and combat threats like viruses and bacteria.

The foundation of traditional vaccine technology has been dead or compromised strains of the original virus or bacterium, or by using fragments of the infectious agent.

However, mRNA vaccines adopted a  completely  different strategy.

During the Covid pandemic, the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines were both based on mRNA technology.

Immune development in response to a specific pathogen is stimulated by vaccination. In the event of a subsequent exposure, the body now has a head start in the battle against disease.
