The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, says there should be enough investment in the coconut industry to place Ghana as the premium center on the continent.
” The government secures two hundred million dollars to support the coconut sector and other tree crop sectors which is highly commendable and praiseworthy.
I believe it is befitting to call on all industry players to invest in the coconut sector to reposition Ghana as the premium Hub for coconut on the global continent, ” He said.
At the launch of the 3rd International Coconut in Takoradi, he stated that there are many benefits derived from the crop.
Mr. Okyere Darko Mensah called for employing technologies to enhance the production of coconut and new varieties and quality of coconut that are pest and disease-immune to attain the desired results.
” We have to have a concerted effort in achieving new means of technology for production, new variety, and quality of coconut that are pest and disease-immune to attain desired results. “
He said the country stands a chance of reaping enormously from the coconut industry just like those in the Philippines, Thailand, and other Southeast countries.
The Paramount Chief of Upper Dixcove Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV urged traditional authorities, family heads to readily make lands available for the cultivation of coconut to reap the full benefits of the crop.
“I, therefore, appeal to Nananom, the family heads who hold the land title in trust for the community and families, to strive to make land acquisition easier for our farmers and investors so as to fulfill the potential that the fast-expanding coconut industry holds for Ghana that can be realized.”
