IMF approved $1.3bn loan for climate and disaster fight in Morocco

IMF

Three weeks after an earthquake in the country left nearly 3,000 dead, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has granted a $1.3 billion (£1 billion) loan to help Morocco enhance its preparation against natural disasters.

Following the earthquake that struck the High Atlas Mountains on September 8, some Moroccans criticized the government for its slow and disjointed response.

IMF officials stated on Thursday that the 18-month loan plan would aid Morocco’s transition to a greener economy by addressing “climate vulnerabilities, “resilience against climate change”, and seizing “opportunities from decarbonization”.
