The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called out the ministers responsible for the nation’s security apparatus, expressing concern over their silence regarding the alleged brutality during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

CHRAJ’s Commissioner, Joseph Whittal, pointed out that the Ministers of Defence, National Security, and the Interior have not issued any statements addressing the events surrounding the protest.

He emphasized that this lack of communication erodes public trust and consensus, highlighting the importance of security agencies maintaining open lines of communication with the public.

During the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, which lasted for three days, protesters gathered in Accra to voice their concerns about the country’s economic hardships, government economic policies, and alleged corruption.

The protest resulted in clashes with the police, who were accused of using excessive force and making numerous arrests, including journalists.

Mr. Whittal expressed disappointment over the silence of the Interior, Defence, and National Security Ministers, urging these officials to engage with the public on such important national security matters.

In response to the incident, the Accra Regional Police Commander, COP Sayibu Gariba, has been summoned by the Police Management Board (POMAB) to provide explanations regarding the reported police brutality during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration. The police have also issued a public apology for any inconvenience caused during the protests.

The demonstration, organized by the Democracy Hub group, called on the government to address economic challenges and investigate corruption allegations. While the protesters attempted to march to the Jubilee House, the police intervened, preventing them from reaching the government’s seat.
