South Sudan president in Russia to hold talks with Putin
Salva Kiir, the president of South Sudan, is in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The visit coincides with efforts by Russia and Western nations to win African support following their invasion of Ukraine.
According to a statement from the president’s press office, Mr. Kiir arrived in the Russian capital on Wednesday and was welcomed by Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko Yurevich.
Mr Kiir’s office says the discussion of regional and global concerns as well as the potential for the growth of bilateral relations will take place during the meeting with the Russian president on Thursday.
It continues by stating that the visit intends to strengthen diplomatic ties and explore additional potential for cooperation in trade, investment, and security.
The UN Security Council voted in May to renew sanctions against South Sudan, including asset freezes, travel restrictions, and an arms embargo; the two leaders will also talk about lifting the sanctions, which are specifically targeted at individuals in South Sudan.
