Gabon to hold “national dialogue” on transitional period next year

The time-frame for a transition to civilian rule will only be set at a national dialogue that will take place between April and June of next year, according to Gabon’s interim prime minister.

The dialogue will also open the door for the development of a new constitution, Raymond Ndong Sima said during a press conference.

Next week, as a lead-up to the national dialogue, an appeal for proposals from “all categories” of the Gabonese public will be launched.

“Everyone has something to say. Men, women, old people, young people, people in housing estates, people in towns, in villages, everyone has an opinion and that’s normal,” he said.

On August 30, when President Ali Bongo was overthrown by the military, they made a commitment to transfer control to civilians through elections by the end of the transitional phase.

The junta led by interim President Brice Oligui Nguema will continue to administer the oil-rich Central African nation until a timeline is formed because there is no clear indication of how long it might take.
