A coup attempt was thwarted in Burkina Faso on Tuesday, according to the military government of the nation.

Officers and others were accused of plotting to destabilize the nation and bring about chaos.

Just under a year has passed since Capt. Ibrahim Traoré, the interim president, seized power.

That was the country’s second coup of 2022, which took place amid a growing Islamist insurgency.

Without providing any further information, the authorities said in a statement read out on television on Wednesday night that they had made some arrests and were actively looking for additional suspects.

According to the statement, the alleged offenders “had the sinister intention of attacking the institutions of the republic and plunging the country into chaos”.

Hours earlier, Capt. Traoré had made a statement saying he was “determined to safely lead the transition [to democracy] despite adversity and the various maneuvers to stop our inexorable march towards assumed sovereignty”.

Elections will be held by July of next year, according to the junta.

Hundreds of people marched in support of the junta on the streets of Ouagadougou on Tuesday as a result of rumors of a mutiny that was allegedly in progress.

The same day, the authorities suspended the French-language news publication Jeune Afrique, accusing it of running articles that denigrated the armed forces.
