Namibia bans South Africa chicken imports after bird flu outbreak
Namibia has suspended imports of live poultry and poultry products from the neighboring South Africa due to a severe bird flu outbreak.
According to Namibia’s agricultural ministry, the suspension was brought on by the “alarming spread” of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in South Africa.
It posted on Facebook, stating that “new cases have been reported in all types of commercial chicken [production] in the provinces of Kwazulu-Natal, Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West respectively”.
According to reports, the outbreak has already killed of over two million chickens.
The Namibian authorities specified that the suspension covered: live poultry, “fresh frozen” poultry meat, table eggs and day old chicks and hatching eggs.
