Former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani mentions President Akufo-Addo as part of NPP’s troubles

Kwadwo Mpiani, a former Chief of Staff during the administration of John Agyekum Kufuor, has raised significant concerns about the role of President Nana Akufo-Addo in the challenges facing the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr. Mpiani asserted that the internal problems within the NPP escalated following the removal of the former National Chairman, Paul Afoko, and the former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, in what he believed to be an unconstitutional manner according to the party’s own rules.

He pointed out that this removal effectively consolidated power within the party under one individual.

“As soon as the party removed these people, they gave the party to one man who was the candidate at that time, and who is the President at this time, and this is the problem we have in the party which we are not confronting,” he stated.

In an interview on Accra-based Joy News, he emphasized that the failure to address this issue could lead to further problems within the party. When asked directly whether he considered President Akufo-Addo to be part of the problem, Mr. Mpiani responded, “He is part of the problem. All of us are part, and he is part of the problem.”

These comments by Kwadwo Mpiani come at a time when the NPP is grappling with internal divisions, including the recent resignation of Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade and Industry Minister, who decided to contest the 2024 presidential election as an Independent Candidate.

Kyerematen cited the dominance of the party by a select few as one of the reasons for his resignation.

Mr. Mpiani’s remarks underscore the challenges the NPP is currently facing and highlight the need for the party to address its internal issues to ensure unity and stability as they prepare for future elections.
