Mali: Ruling Junta delays February presidential election for ‘technical reasons’
The scheduled presidential election for February in Mali has been postponed, according to the country’s military junta.
A new date would be announced, and separate elections for the parliamentary body would be held, according to a government spokesman, Col. Abdoulaye Maiga.
He said that “technical reasons,” such as problems with the adoption of a new constitution and a review of the electoral laws, were the causes for the delay.
Following this announcement, the opposition and civil society organizations have expressed their disappointment.
Following military coups in 2020 and 2021, the elections were meant to restore constitutional government in Mali.
Elections were initially scheduled to take place in 2026, but after pressure from the West African bloc Ecowas, they were moved to February 2024.
