Police investigating the killing of a 60-year-old woman accused of witchcraft
In the West Mamprusi district of Janga, situated in the North East region, law enforcement authorities are conducting an investigation into the murder of a 60-year-old woman, who had been accused of practicing witchcraft.
The perpetrator, a young man with familial ties to the victim, is alleged to have shot her. Subsequently, the deceased’s body has been transferred to WaleWale Hospital, where an autopsy will be performed.
Zakari Iddi, a brother-in-law of the victim, recounted the incident, stating that the woman was inside her room when the assailant entered and shot her. The motive behind the attack appears to be suspicion of witchcraft.
It is worth noting that in 2020, Ghana’s parliament passed legislation aimed at safeguarding individuals accused of practicing witchcraft.
The law criminalizes the mistreatment of such individuals or their expulsion from communities. This legal framework was established following a tragic incident in July 2020, where a 90-year-old woman was lynched in Kafaba, within the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
This incident sparked widespread condemnation from both local and international human rights organizations.
