Burundi’s President Ndayishimiye condemns coup rumors

President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi has denounced rumors that he was the target of a coup while he was away for two weeks attending meetings in Cuba and at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Just one week after the president left the country on September 10th, rumors of a plot against him began to spread on social media.

The rumors’ origin is currently unknown.

Mr. Ndayishimiye blamed them in his speech following his return to the nation on Sunday night, saying that they were the work of “people who have always wanted to paint a bad image” of Burundi.

There have been over ten successful and unsuccessful coup attempts in Burundi.

“Back in the day we went through it, but now our hearts are calm, sleep knowing well that you will wake up and go to your work,” Mr Ndayishimiye said.

Before his arrival on Sunday, the country’s interior ministry posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “no house is burning” and urged people not to pay attention to “those rumors that distract”.
