Leaders of #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo vows to continue their protest despite the arrest of some participants
The leadership of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest has affirmed their determination to persist with their demonstration despite the arrests of some participants and alleged police intimidation.
Previously, the Ghana Police Service had applied for a court injunction to prevent the group from protesting near the Jubilee House as planned.
On Thursday morning, the police detained 49 members of the group and dispersed them to various police stations.
Among those arrested were a BBC reporter, a cameraman, and a Metro TV reporter, but they were later released. Addressing the media following the first day of the protest, the group strongly criticized the police’s actions and reiterated their commitment to continuing the demonstration.
“TheFixCountry Team were hoping to announce the release of fellow comrades by the police. However, they are still being detained unlawfully by the Ghana Police Service. We would like to remind the public that we have planned a three-day demonstration. And we continue to speak against injustice and poor governance in Ghana.”
“We are only Ghanaians, all we need is food, water, and clothes, we want to be able to take care of our mothers and fathers. We will stay and fight, and will take our country back,” some leaders of the group pointed out.
The Police explained that the 49 arrested suspects engaged in an unlawful assembly and violated the Public Order Act.
Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has denounced the arrests of protest organizers and key members of the ‘#OccupyJulorbiHouse Demonstration,’ describing it as disgraceful and regressive.
