Don’t Downplay Ghana’s Democracy – NCCE Urges Ghanaians

In recent times, the Sub-Saharan region has been plagued with coup det’at.

Niger and Gabon recently joined a host of countries- Burkina Faso, Mali, Sudan, and Guinea who have all experienced successful coups.

Persistent insecurity, stagnant growth, exclusionary economic governance, and low development are some indicators associated with the coup.

However good or bad the coup may be, people seem to defend the action taken by the military juntas in these countries.

In an interview with Beach News, some residents of the Sekondi-Takoradi did not mince words on whether they disagree or agree with the rising coup in the Sub-region.

According to them, Ghana is on the verge of witnessing a coup should things remain unchanged.

” I do agree with the coup plotters, a great deal. African leaders are too greedy, they are always looking to enrich themselves to the detriment of the people, who put them in power. I really wish this happens in Ghana, so we can clean the country and make everything anew,”

“What is the reason for one person staying in power for long? His time is up and he needs to go. I would prefer that a coup will happen in Ghana. If someone should stay in power for this long,”

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE, Madam Kathlyn Addy has challenged Ghanaians not to downplay the country’s democracy.

She said the current political turbulence in the Sub-region is a source of worry and a wake-up call to Ghanaians to guard the gains made in the democratic dispensation jealously.

She identified the monetization of politics and the advent of fake news through social media as serious ones that tend to destabilize Ghana’s thriving democracy.
