Niger: Ousted President Bazoum petitions Ecowas court for his release
Mohamed Bazoum, the Ousted Nigerien President, has petitioned the court of the West African bloc Ecowas for his released, according to his attorney.
Following his “arbitrary arrest” and “violation of freedom of movement” during the July coup, Mr. Bazoum’s lawyer Seydou Diagne said a lawsuit was filed with the court on Monday demanding his release and restoration as president.
“We request… in view of the violation of political rights, that the state of Niger be ordered to immediately restore constitutional order by handing over power to President Bazoum, who must continue to exercise it until the end of his mandate,” he is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying
The application lists his wife and son, both of whom are being held captive by the military junta, according to the Associated Press.
If diplomatic efforts are unsuccessful, Ecowas has threatened to use military force to restore Mr. Bazoum to power.
