Brain-computer interface (BCI) startup Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk, in preparation for its first human trial, has begun recruiting people.
The company wants to test its technology on paralyzed individuals as part of its mission to link human brains to computers.
They will be assisted by a robot in having a BCI implanted, which will enable them to operate a computer cursor or type with just their thoughts.
However, BCI implants have already been implanted in people by rival companies.
Following earlier struggles to obtain approval, Neuralink finally received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its first human clinical trial in May.
According to Neuralink at the time, the FDA approval was “an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people”.
According to former and current employees who spoke to Reuters, the company requested authorization to implant its devices in 10 individuals.
It is unknown what number was ultimately decided.
