EU temporarily suspends food aid to Somalia amid widespread theft
The World Food Programme (WFP) has received confirmation from the European Union that payments to it for humanitarian aid deliveries to Somalia have been temporarily suspended.
The action was taken as a precaution to protect EU funds, according to Balazs Ujvari, a spokesman for the European Commission.
Local officials, members of the security forces, and aid workers have all been implicated in the widespread theft of aid meant for Somalis who are vulnerable.
More than $7m (£5.6m) was spent on WFP operations in Somalia by the European Union last year.
According to the US Agency for International Development, there are no immediate plans to stop providing food aid to Somalia.
