Burkina Faso assembly approves sending troops to Niger
The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) of Burkina Faso has unanimously voted to send troops to neighboring Niger, where the military overthrew the government on July 26.
According to State TV’s reporting of Defence Minister Col. Maj. Kassoum Coulibaly, the troops will stay in Niger for a three-month period that can be renewed in order to “fighting terrorism and contributing to stabilising Sahel states”.
In anticipation of a planned military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), Burkina Faso’s interim cabinet approved the deployment of troops to Niger on August 30.
The military junta in Niger, which is under pressure from Ecowas to reinstate the democratically elected government or risk additional sanctions and potential regional military intervention, has received support from only a select few nations, including Burkina Faso and Mali.
A joint body to coordinate efforts to address “common challenges,” such as a jihadist insurgency, general insecurity, and underdevelopment, has also been agreed to by Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali.
