“We prefer to have technical aid”, says Libya interior minister

Rescue teams are still extricating dead remains from wrecked buildings and the water a week after devastating floods decimated Derna.

Essam Abu Zeriba, the interior minister of the self-declared eastern administration, told the media that while they embrace all forms of assistance, they currently favor “technical aid.”

“[We] prefer to have technical aid, that is, search and rescue teams and teams specialising in identifying bodies. Libya is poor in such technical experience,” he said.

He hailed the countries that were already providing assistance,  including Turkey, UAE, Saudi Arabia and neighbouring Egypt.

However, he added that this “is just the drop in a sea of ill-fated areas” and said that all teams had been distributed to other locations.

“All rescue teams are still working in an attempt to find bodies under the debris. There are also rescue teams working in the sea,” he continued.

It is clear that thousands of people have died, and many more are still missing.
