Ethiopia: Nine die from cholera in Benishangul-Gumuz region
State television (ETV), citing health officials, reported on Sunday that nine people had died as a result of a cholera outbreak in Ethiopia’s northwestern Benishangul-Gumuz Region.
According to Abdulmunhem Al-Beshir, a regional health official, “some 131 people have been infected in the outbreak while nine others died,” according to ETV.
In three districts, cases have been reported, according to the Benishangul-Gumuz Health Bureau.
In the meantime, a cholera outbreak in Ethiopia’s northwestern Amhara region also claimed the lives of nine Sudanese refugees.
According to local media, the cholera outbreak has killed 320 people and spread to 11 regions of Ethiopia in the past year.
A severe humanitarian crisis has developed in the area as a result of a two-year civil war and drought.
