Mali’s ruling junta has cancelled Independence Day celebrations scheduled for next week following a resumption of hostilities in the north.

According to a statement from the council of ministers, the anniversary will be “celebrated in sobriety and in the spirit of national revival”.

Assimi Goita, the head of the junta, gave the government instructions to use the money set aside for this year’s celebrations to help victims of recent deadly attacks.

The council also discussed the prospect of calling up  reservists to fend off militant assaults.

Despite the deployment of Russian Wagner Group mercenaries, insecurity is increasing in the northern and central regions.
