Libya floods: Fears that death toll could reach 20,000
There are concerns that up to 20,000 people may have died in the devastating floods that struck the eastern part of Libya on Sunday.
The figure, according to the mayor of the devastated port city of Derna, was based on the number of districts that were totally destroyed when two dams burst, unleashing a tsunami of water as people slept.
The raging floods have so far been confirmed to have killed more than 5,300 people and displaced about 30,000 more.
Today (Thursday), medical humanitarians from Médecins Sans Frontières are anticipated to arrive in the city and join the emergency response teams.
Rescue workers are requesting more body bags because there are still many bodies unrecovered under the rubble or in the water.
While rescuers are having difficulty reaching Derna, thousands remain missing.
