South Africa: More than half of the 77 Johannesburg fire victims still unidentified
In the South African city of Johannesburg, a hijacked building was completely destroyed by fire on August 31. More than half of the victims are still unidentified.
The number of bodies whose identities are known has increased to 30 according to the Gauteng Department of Health, which reports that 18 additional victims had been added to the initial 12 victims.
The Gauteng Department of Health’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, stated that the additional bodies were found and identified through forensic digital analysis of the victims’ recovered fingerprints and family members’ examinations of the bodies.
But according to Mr. Modiba, 44 of the 77 bodies that were recovered from the fire are still unidentified.
He informed the local media that 38 of the 44 unidentified bodies are currently undergoing DNA examinations to determine their identities.
Additionally, Mr. Modiba stated that 27 survivors were still receiving medical care.
