Outrage as Zimbabwe president names son as deputy finance minister

Mnangagwa

Emmerson Mnangagwa, president of Zimbabwe, has been accused of nepotism after appointing his son as one of a new set of ministers following his contentious re-election last month.

As part of the quota for youth in parliament, Mr. Mnangagwa named his son David Kudakwashe as deputy finance minister on Monday.

Tongai Mnangagwa, his nephew, was appointed as the deputy minister of tourism, according to local media.

Former banker Mthuli Ncube was retained as finance minister, and Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, national chair of the ruling Zanu-PF party, was reappointed as defense minister.

Fadzayi Mahere, a vocal member of the main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), called the new ministerial lineup “indefensible” and charged Mr. Mnangagwa with encouraging nepotism.

Some social media users have expressed dissatisfaction with the position.

The ruling party and the presidency have not yet made an official statement regarding the accusation. However, Mr. Mnangagwa’s supporters assert that his son is qualified for the position.

The opposition has challenged the legitimacy of Mr. Mnangagwa’s reelection by alleging fraud, and some observers have alleged that the election did not adhere to national and international standards.
