Sudan: RSF leader Hemedti pledges support for UN aid efforts

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), the commander of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has vowed to assist humanitarian organizations in their efforts to aid those affected by the war.

Hemedti made the commitment in a telephone conversation with Martin Griffiths, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator.
He said that RSF was ready to enhance “collaboration and coordination… to ensure a seamless provision of aid to those affected”.

Along with promising to “safeguard the aid,” the RSF director also promised to “ensure ease of operations for humanitarian personnel”.

During the conversations with Hemedti, Mr. Griffiths asserted “the urgent need for stepped-up access to people in need,” according to a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The RSF declared on August 13 that it had established an organization to streamline the distribution of aid in the regions under its control.

The RSF has been charged with preventing the distribution of humanitarian aid on several occasions by both the Sudanese army and international rights organizations.

The Sudanese army and the RSF are still engaged in combat in several regions of the nation, and efforts at regional and international mediation to put an end to the fighting have so far been unsuccessful.
