Smart Cards: Pause, go back, and do the needful -Minority charges DVLA to consult parliament

The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA), according to the Minority in Parliament, must consult Parliament before making any modifications to the current driver’s licence.

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA), declared that it would start gradually phasing out all previous driver’s licence cards that had been issued before to September 2017.

These outdated cards will be swapped out by smart licence cards, according to the DVLA.

The challenge will begin right away and last until March 31, 2024. All old card driver’s licences will no longer be valid after that date, according to the DVLA.

Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agboza said the Licencing Authority must seek parliamentary approval before implementing this new move.

“The laws we give them are supposed to be implemented in consultation with agencies. If you want to change the current driving license completely, I think that there should be public consultation and education. You can’t just write a letter. And my checks are such that the committee in Parliament is not aware of this, and that is why I am calling on them to pause, go back, and do the needful.”

“The DVLA is not a law unto themselves. They are supposed to implement laws that are supposed to be followed by Ghanaians. Without education, if they implement this change, it is going to be difficult for people to comply,” he stated.
