The Akufo-Addo administration is under fire from former president John Dramani Mahama for allegedly enabling widespread corruption in the nation.
Therefore, he urged Ghanaians to reject corruption as the norm because it impeded advancement on all fronts and denied opportunity to young people.
On September 6, 2023, Mr. Mahama made the comments during a Facebook Live speech.
He claimed that because the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership enabled corruption to infiltrate all facets of society, some Ghanaians now extol and defend it.
Mr. Mahama urged Ghanaians to take up the fight against corruption and to hold their leaders accountable.
“We must all join the fight against corruption, and demand accountability from our leaders. We must not allow corruption to continue to hold our country back,” he said.
Mr. Mahama meanwhile urged Ghanaians who are 18 years of age or older but do not possess voter identification cards to participate in the upcoming limited registration drive that will be coordinated by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Additionally, he joined calls for the exercise to take place at the electoral areas rather than just the Electoral Commission district offices.
“The EC must reconsider its decision to restrict the exercise to its district offices only. Access to voter ID should be easy and not limited by location,” Mahama added.
John Mahama’s remarks come as the Office of the Special Prosecutor is looking into allegations that the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources had millions of dollars that were thought to be tainted.
