Minority suspends scheduled protest against the BoG
The Minority in Parliament has decided to put on hold their planned protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison.
This decision comes in light of a court hearing where the police had sought an injunction on the protest due to security concerns. The court has postponed its ruling on a preliminary objection raised by the MPs’ lawyers to Friday, September 8.
The MPs, led by Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Director of Legal Affairs for the NDC, contested the authority of the Police to initiate the legal action independently. They argued that, as per Article 88(5) of the 1992 Constitution and the State Proceedings Act, only the Attorney General has the authority to initiate such action.
In the meantime, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has assured their supporters that the protest will proceed once the court delivers its ruling.
The protest had originally been scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, at the Bank of Ghana headquarters in Accra. The Minority in Parliament had accused the Bank of Ghana of economic mismanagement and had called for Dr. Addison’s resignation.
The police had raised concerns that the protest might lead to a breach of peace, prompting their request for a court injunction.
The court’s decision on the preliminary objection will determine whether the protest can proceed as planned.
