The Minority Caucus in Parliament has characterized the current setup of the Bank of Ghana as a scene of wrongdoing.
Speaking at a public forum held on Thursday at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) in preparation for their upcoming #OccupyBoG protest, the Minority expressed its disapproval of the Central Bank’s extensive lending to the government over the past year.
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, pointed out that despite the fiscal challenges of 2016, which was also an election year, former President John Dramani Mahama did not resort to borrowing from the central bank.
However, according to the Minority, the current management of the Central Bank has been deeply involved in financial misconduct, essentially turning the Bank into a scene of unlawful activity.
Ayariga stated, “It is important to point out that, in 2016, on the watch of President John Mahama and notwithstanding that year’s general elections, the NDC government financed the entire budget without any support from the Bank of Ghana. The Bank of Ghana is now a crime scene and the managers of the economy led by Mr. Strategist aided and abetted this economic crime.”
The protest, scheduled for September 5, 2023, is being organized by the Minority to demand the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his deputies, whom they accuse of mismanaging the central bank.
The Minority has announced its intention to picket at the Bank of Ghana headquarters on September 5 to formally present a petition to the governor calling for his and his deputies’ resignation.
Despite the police’s suggestion to use alternative routes for the planned protest, the Caucus rejected it and obtained an injunction against the protest.
Nevertheless, the Caucus remains determined and has pledged to proceed with its plans.
