Police authorities have successfully restored peace to Godenu, a village situated near Hohoe in the Volta Region, after a violent upheaval that resulted in the ignition of a Police patrol vehicle by certain members of the community.
Reportedly, the disturbance unfolded on August 30, 2023, subsequent to a collision involving a patrol vehicle and a motorbike rider. The rider sustained injuries from the accident and was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment.
In response to the incident, some community members became agitated, leading to the pelting of stones at the Police patrol vehicle. Law enforcement officers within the vehicle attempted to disperse the agitated crowd.
However, the situation escalated, culminating in the setting ablaze of the patrol vehicle.
Tragically, two individuals lost their lives as a result of the violence. The injured motorbike rider remains under medical care. In connection with the unrest, twelve individuals have been apprehended, and a Bruni pistol has been recovered.
Ongoing investigations by the Police aim to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
To maintain order and safety, heightened security measures have been enacted in Hohoe Township and the adjacent areas.
The Police have appealed to the public to maintain composure and extend cooperation during the course of their inquiry.
