NDC considers legal action against EC due to limited voter registration
Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that the party’s Legal Directorate is considering exploring legal avenues to challenge the Electoral Commission’s decision regarding the limited voter registration.
The Commission recently announced its plan to conduct the limited voter registration exclusively at its district offices, starting from September 12, 2023, to October 2, 2023.
The NDC contends that this approach could potentially disenfranchise a significant number of newly eligible voters.
Mr. Tamakloe expressed the NDC’s intention to challenge the legality of this decision through available legal means.
He emphasized the party’s desire for a more decentralized registration process to ensure that newly eligible voters have the opportunity to participate and that the rights of their Members of Parliament (MPs) are upheld within the boundaries of the law.
On August 21, a coalition of seven political parties in Ghana expressed their dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s decision to confine the voter registration exercise to its district offices.
These parties argued that such a move could lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible Ghanaians who have come of voting age. Instead, they urged the commission to consider conducting the registration at electoral areas to ensure broader accessibility and inclusion.
