Northern Regional Chairman of NPP confirms veracity of ‘IGP’s leaked’ tape
The contentious leaked tape that allegedly shows a plot to oust the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been verified as authentic by the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu.
On Monday, August 28, 2023, Bugri Naabu made the confirmation when he testified before the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee, which had been assembled to look into the alleged plot against the IGP.
Bugri Naabu was completely candid when he admitted that he and three other senior police officers did in fact have the crucial conversation which sparked controversy.
According to him, the three police officers included Commander Asare, COP Mensah and Superintendent Gyebi.
Bugri Naabu additionally disclosed that the conversation took place in his office, which is situated in Osu close to the Osu Police Station.
His account states that the senior officers approached him with a goal of promoting the IGP’s dismissal. The officers’ explanation for this request was that Dr. Akuffo Damapre’s actions were thought to be more closely aligned with those of the opposition NDC, potentially jeopardizing the chances of the ruling party winning the upcoming 2024 elections.
He claimed that the request from the senior officers scared him, which is why he chose to record them to make it more difficult for any denial.
The Ad-Hoc Committee is led by the esteemed Samuel Atta Akyea, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, and its members include Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan, a legal and human rights specialist
The purpose of this panel is to look into both the veracity of the tape that was leaked and the complex allegations that have drawn the attention of the country.
