Alexandra Paul, a 31-year-old Canadian Olympic figure skater, has died in a car accident.
According to police, she was killed on Tuesday in Ontario when a truck crashed into several stationary vehicles.
Her infant, who was in the car with her, survived and received non-life-threatening medical treatment in a hospital.
According to Skate Canada, Ms. Paul left an “indelible mark” on the world of figure skating and was a “shining star on and off the ice.”
She represented Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and earned a silver medal at the 2010 World Junior Figure Skating Championships.
Before retiring from competitive skating in 2016, she alongside her partner and husband, Mitchell Islam, won a number of international medals.
“It is with a heavy heart that Skate Canada announces the sudden passing of a cherished member of our skating community, Alexandra Paul,” the organization said in a statement.
“As we remember Alexandra’s contributions to the sport, we also reflect on the camaraderie and sportsmanship she exemplified.
“She was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model for aspiring skaters, demonstrating the values of resilience, perseverance, and sportsmanlike conduct.
“Our thoughts are with Alexandra’s family, friends, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know her during this difficult time.”
Ms. Paul was such “an accomplished young woman,” according to sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya’s post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
