W/R Fire Command Marks Fire Week With A Call For Citizens To Abide With Fire Safety Measures
The Ghana National Fire Service Western Command has commemorated this year’s Fire Safety Week with a call on residents and institutions to put in fire safety measures at homes and workplaces.
The launch of the celebration on the theme, “60 years of existence, fire safety the choice for a safer environment; key to investment”, brought together market queens, night clubs owners, owners of bars and pubs, restaurant owners, institutions, individuals and representatives from the Sekondi Takoradi Metro Assembly.
Over the years, Ghana has experienced its fair share of fire outbreaks and related emergencies. Ranging from the loss of lives, homes and properties, every district in the western Region has felt the devastating effects of uncontrolled fires.
This year, the service seeks to heighten public awareness of fire safety, institutional safety, domestic safety and roles of individuals to turn the narrative.
The week-long celebrations will also be used to honour courageous firefighters who risk their lives to keep Ghanaians safe from the devastating tragedies of fire.
Speaking at the regional launch of the celebrations, the regional fire officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Frederick Ohemeng reminded individuals of their roles in keeping the environment safe from fire and other incidents.
He reminded individuals about the roles they play in keeping the environment safe by installing and maintaining smoke detectors and alarms at home and workplaces, safe kitchen practices, avoiding overloading circuit cords and seeking technical advice for building plans among others.
ACFO Ohemeng noted that, whilst the regional statistics of fire outbreaks and occurrences have declined, there is still more to be done to eradicate it.
