In a virtual meeting with Kenya’s president, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew agreed the popular video-sharing app would oversee content in the East African country.
The agreement was reached a week after Kenyan lawmakers debated a plan to outlaw TikTok due to the app’s explicit sexual material and videos that encourage violence and hate speech.
Additionally, it was agreed that TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, would open an office in Kenya.
TikTok’s operations in the area would be centralized there, according to Kenyan President William Ruto.
The moderation agreement, according to him, would be a step toward ensuring that TikTok‘s content followed Kenyan laws and norms, just like on other platforms like YouTube and Twitter, now known as X.
The president said while allowing Kenya to profit from the money that can be made on various platforms, the government wanted to lessen the negative aspects of social media.
He said social media brought in between 300 million Kenyan shillings ($2 million, £1.6 million) and 500 million Kenyan shillings per month, without saying whether these amounts represented total earnings or tax revenue.
