Minority insists on handing over its petition directly to the BoG Governor

On September 5, 2023, the Minority in Parliament is set to hold a protest, during which they demand that Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, personally accept their petition.

This comes after the Minority previously issued a 21-day ultimatum, urging both Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies to step down from their positions. Their concerns revolve around the Bank of Ghana’s management of a reported loss of 60 billion Ghana Cedis in its 2022 financial statement, as well as the ongoing $250 million project for a new head office.

In light of these issues, the Minority plans to gather for a protest at the Bank of Ghana’s premises on September 5, seeking to draw attention to their dissatisfaction with the continued tenure of the Governor and his deputies.

Following a closed-door meeting with the police to discuss protest procedures, Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, emphasized the Minority’s insistence on the Governor himself receiving their petition. Ayariga expressed optimism that the police would relay this demand to the Bank of Ghana’s Governor and believed that he would oblige.

Before the scheduled picketing on September 5, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command extended an invitation to the Minority on August 23.

However, the police expressed discomfort with the initially chosen protest routes and location. They requested the Minority to change these aspects, citing concerns related to public order, safety, and the unhampered operation of essential services.
