Gyakye Quayson, expresses satisfaction with returning to Ghana serve his constituents
After residing in Canada for several years, James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, has conveyed his contentment with returning to Ghana to serve his constituents.
His victory as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate in the Assin North by-election has further solidified this sense of fulfillment.
During the by-election held on June 27, 2023, Gyakye Quayson secured a resounding victory with 17,245 votes, constituting 57.56 percent of the total votes cast. His triumph over competitors Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) was evident in the poll results. Charles Opoku obtained 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15 percent of the total votes, while Bernice Enyonam Sefenu secured a modest 87 votes (0.29%).
Gyakye Quayson’s journey to regain the parliamentary seat was marked by challenges, including legal complications due to his dual citizenship, which led to his expulsion from Parliament following a Supreme Court ruling on May 17. Despite these setbacks, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his constituents.
Speaking on Citi TV, Gyakye Quayson expressed his happiness at being able to contribute to his community’s progress.
While acknowledging the hurdles he encountered, he underscored his unwavering determination to secure the seat and work for the betterment of his constituents.
Addressing the court proceedings against him, Gyakye Quayson currently faces forgery and perjury charges. The state has brought charges against him for deceiving a public officer, forging a passport or travel certificate, making a false statutory declaration, committing perjury, and making false declarations for office.
Despite these legal challenges, Gyakye Quayson remains committed to fulfilling his duties as a representative of the Assin North Constituency.
