Sekondi Female Prisons get 1-year supply of sanitary pads from Takoradi-Anaji Rotary Club
The Rotary Club of Takoradi-Anaji has supported inmates of the Sekondi Females Prison in Sekondi-Takoradi with one year supply of sanitary pads on Wednseday, August 23, 2023.
According to the Club President, Edwin Kofi Amanor, the donation was on the back of a series of research and surveys conducted on the challenges faced by the inmates in acquiring sanitary pads.
Speaking to Beach News, Rotarian Amanor said, “one of our areas of focus is disease prevention. We run a few surveys and conducted research on challenges faced by inmates of the Sekondi Prison in acquiring sanitary pads.”
“So we have taken it upon ourselves to pad the female prison inmates for a year. We are going to give them sanitary pads for a period of one year…the Rotary Club of Takoradi Anaji has taken this mandate upon ourselves to boost the confidence of our women in the prison.”
The Public Relations Officer for the Sekondi Females Prisons, ASP Prisca Portia Anane expressed gratitude for the donations made by the club.
“This is a very nice initiative. We are really glad. It is the thoughtfulness that matters….for Rotary Club to come up with their money and support the Sekondi Female Prisons with sanitary pads, I will say may God bless them.”
The donation of sanitary pads did not end at the Sekondi Female Prisons, it was extended to female students of Collins Avenue Islamic School, Kansaworodo Catholic Primary School and Kansaworodo M/A JHS. The over 200 students were supported with sanitary pad supply for 6 months.
Madam Asibi, the assistant headmistress for Kansaworodo M/A JHS spoke to Beach News. She said, “It is a laudable opportunity for us because we have been facing problems with students who are unable to afford the pads, so they normally wrap their pullovers around their waist. Some of them normally use the cloth and you know how uncomfortable it is.”
“So having this opportunity to donated six (6) months supply of sanitary pads, we are really excited. It will also help their parents because of the cost of buying pads currently.”
The Rotary Club of Takoradi Anaji also undertook phase two of their tree planting exercise with the students of the various schools. Together, they planted over 100 trees.
