President of Russia Vladimir Putin has told the heads of China, India, South Africa, and Brazil that a multipolar world will result from the growing influence of their Brics group.
Speaking via video to the summit in Johannesburg, Mr. Putin declared his opposition to the influence held by the G7 and other western-led organizations.
Mr. Putin has an international arrest warrant for Ukraine, which rendered him unable to attend in person.
Brics expansion has been called for by the Chinese president Xi Jinping, who claims it will improve the fairness of international governance.
A number of nations, including Algeria, Iran, and Ethiopia, have expressed interest in joining. Brazil has, however, advised against using the grouping an alternative to the G7.
As leaders are engaged in closed negotiations, a press conference that was scheduled for later has been canceled.
