PPP urges EC to expand centers for limited registration exercise
The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has officially made a request to the Electoral Commission (EC) to expand the number of registration centers for the upcoming voter registration process within each district.
This proposal aims to ease the inconvenience faced by citizens who would otherwise need to travel long distances to register.
Scheduled from September 12 to October 2, 2023, the limited registration exercise targets eligible Ghanaians who turned 18 years old after the 2020 registration period and other eligible voters.
The PPP’s recommendation is grounded in the belief that augmenting the registration centers in each district would notably enhance the accessibility of the registration process.
This approach aligns with the party’s vision of fostering convenient and inclusive participation of citizens in the democratic procedure.
Remy Paa Kow Edmundson, the National Secretary of the PPP, emphasized that this straightforward measure of increasing the registration centers per district would yield a significant positive impact.
It would facilitate easier registration and promote broader involvement in the democratic system, ultimately contributing to a more representative and engaged electorate.
Mr. Edmundson further advocated for the establishment of a fixed date for District Level Elections, similar to the existing setup for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. The current fluctuation in election dates complicates planning for candidates and voters. A fixed date, according to him, would enhance organization and simplify the process.
On a separate note, seven political parties in the country have jointly rejected the Electoral Commission’s decision to limit the upcoming voter registration exercise to its district offices. They argue that this approach could disenfranchise individuals who have come of voting age.
These parties, including the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Convention People’s Party (CPP), People’s National Congress (PNC), All Progressives Congress (APC), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), pledge to persist in their efforts to ensure that all eligible Ghanaians are registered.
They propose that the registration process be extended to electoral areas instead of being confined to district offices.
