NAFCo to collaborate with Ministry of Food and Agriculture to expand warehouses nationwide
The National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCo) has announced a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to spearhead the construction of additional warehouses across the nation.
This initiative is aimed at fortifying grain storage capacity in a proactive bid to prevent food shortages, particularly in senior high schools.
In a press briefing held in Accra, Hanan Abdul-Wahab, the Chief Executive Officer of NAFCo, elucidated that the concerted effort to erect more warehouses is propelled by the imminent necessity to accommodate a potentially abundant grain harvest, a result of the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
The alliance between NAFCo and the National Food Suppliers Association had recently encountered tension spanning over two months due to GH¢200 million in arrears owed to association members for their contributions to various senior high schools’ food supply. This discord saw a partial resolution, with nearly 85% of the dues cleared, while 15% remains unsettled.
To accentuate their concerns, association members embarked on protests at NAFCo’s premises in July, leading to the hospitalization of two individuals. The resolution ensued after the disbursement of funds.
In a recent interaction with the spokesperson for the aggrieved members, Kwaku Amedume disclosed that the government still owes the association over GH¢300 million for food supplied in the year 2023.
