Social media platforms Tiktok and Telegram as well as the online betting site 1XBet have been banned by Somalian government.
According to the government, these platforms are being utilized “terrorists and groups responsible for spreading immorality… to spread graphic clips, photos and mislead society”.
This news comes as Somalia sets an ambitious goal for the next five months: to completely eradicate the militant al-Shabab group, which still holds swaths of the nation under its control.
According to a statement from the ministry of communications and technology, internet service providers must implement the ban by August 24 or risk unspecified legal action.
In the capital, Mogadishu, a recent conference on internet and social media security highlighted the detrimental effects of online platforms on young people, including “causing some of them to lose their lives”.
