UN expresses grave concern for Niger’s poorest because of coup

The head of the UN’s human rights office has expressed deep concern for the people of Niger , who he said will now face even greater hardships as a result of last month’s coup.
Volker Türk urged the military generals to swiftly reestablish the rule of law.
With borders closed, trade at a standstill, power outages, and rising food prices, he claimed that in a nation where nearly half the population lives in abject poverty, the situation was getting worse.
His comments come as West African army chiefs are meeting for a second day in Ghana in order to coordinate potential military action should diplomatic efforts to overthrow the coup fail
